Shasta Deanery Regional Youth Ministry is taking a bus to LA for the Religious Education Congress March 17 - 21. We travel by bus leaving early on Wednesday the 17, visit a mission Wednesday evening, attend Youth Day on Thursday the 18th then the Congress continues on Friday and Saturday (while the teens go to Disneyland) and then we return by bus on Sunday the 21.Our bus is only half full. Diocese of Sacramento Sponsors Faithful Father Contest for Youth

In an effort to recognize the important role a dad can play in passing on the Catholic faith to his children, the Diocese of Sacramento Department of Youth & Young Adult Ministry is sponsoring a "Faithful Father Contest" for youth grades 6-12 in conjunction with our "Fathers Day With Bishop Soto" event at the River Cats game on Sunday, June 21st 2009. Contest winner will receive 4 Tickets to the Father's Day event and special recognition on the scoreboard during the game.

Contestants can enter the contest by sending an email to kstaszkow@diocese-sacramento.org with "faithful father contest" in the subject line. Email should include name, contact information, age, grade, school and parish and describe in 50 words or less how your father has been an example to you of how to live as a good Catholic christian. The contest is open to youth grades 6-12 only.

Entries are due by Friday, June 5th. Must be a registered parishioner of a Catholic Parish in the Diocese of Sacramento to win. Email kstaszkow@diocese-sacramento.org or call 916-733-0152 for more information.

Diocese of Sacramento Offers Scholarship To Encourage Multicultural Youth Liturgies

The Youth & Young Adult Ministry Office is excited to offer scholarships to Mercy Center's Multicultural Liturgical Arts Intensive, June 9-12 in Auburn to youth ministry coordinators and/or liturgy coordinators to encourage youth masses, retreats and prayer experiences more inclusive of the many cultures that our youth belong to.

Four 50% scholarships of $175 are offered to qualified applicants on a first come, first serve basis. Scholarship recipients should: 1. Be looking for new ways to make youth liturgy more inclusive and more reflective of the diversity of their youth population, 2. Have a pastor that is open to their efforts, 3. Currently have a regular youth mass functioning in the parish, and 4. Be a youth ministry coordinator or liturgy coordinator who has primary responsibility for liturgy planning for the youth mass in their parish. Only one scholarship per parish.

Interested parties should email Kevin with name, contact info, parish and a brief description of their youth liturgy, their role in coordination/planning of the liturgies and a brief statement of why they want to attend the workshop. Recipients will be asked to submit a one-page report to the diocese in December 2009 explaining how the workshop has enhanced their youth liturgy.

Nominate Young Adult Volunteers & Youth Ministry Coordinators for the Marello Youth Leadership Awards

The Diocese of Sacramento Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry and the Marello Youth Retreat Center in Loomis are seeking nominations for the Morello Leadership Awards. We plan to recognize 7 young adults (age 21-29) and 3 Youth Ministry Coordinators at the Reds, Whites, Jazz & Blues Event to be held on June 20, 2009. We are seeking nominations. You can nominate a young adult volunteer leader or a youth ministry coordinator online at www.nominateyouth.com.

There are two different awards.

The Marello Award for Leadership In Ministry
recognizes exemplary leadership in ministry by a young adult age 21-29. Nominees must be practicing Catholics, active parish members, and involved as volunteer leaders in either a parish-based ministry (RCIA team, parish council, youth ministry leader, retreat leader, choir director, liturgy committee leadership, catechist) or in a lay movement (i.e. Couples for Christ, Cursillo, etc.) Nominees will be invited to submit an application along with a letter of recommendation from their parish pastor and another church leader that has observed and/or supervised their work in ministry.

The Marello Award for Youth & Young Adult Ministry
recognizes an individual that has served in a leadership capacity in youth and/or young adult ministry. Nominees should have demonstrated excellence in youth ministry in the Spirit of the US Bishops’ documents “Renewing the Vision” and “Sons & Daughters of the Light” and the Diocesan Synod recommendations. Nominees must currently serve the church as a coordinator/director or leader of youth or young adult ministry in either a parish-based ministry or movement. Nominees will be asked to submit an application along with a letter of recommendation from their parish pastor and from another church leader that has observed and/or supervised their work in ministry.

700 Youth Turn Out For Diocese of Sacramento Youth Convention 2009

Over 700 people representing 50 different parish ministries and movements turned out for the Diocese of Sacramento's 56th Annual Diocesan Youth Convention held Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Bishop Francis Quinn Catholic Center in Palo Cedro, CA (near Redding). It was the first time in its 56 year history that the event has been held in the northern part of the diocese. The purpose of youth convention is to empower young people to live more consciously and deliberately as disciples of Christ, to strengthen and enhance youth ministries, and to promote collaboration between youth groups & movements.Highlights of the day were Brad & Gene from APeX Ministries, a candid interview with Bishop Soto, awesome comic book images of the saints courtesy Rob Sheridan, and the music!

The theme for the day was “HEROES: Many Gifts, One Spirit.” It challenged participants to look closely at how God has endowed them with special abilities and called them to use those gifts to change the world. The day used the lives of the saints as models for young people on how to both identify their charisms and to dedicate their lives to the mission of Christ. The morning workshop featured 15 different catechetical workshops on the Saints. The afternoon workshops featured youth and young adults sharing their faith and their experiences as ministers from many parish ministries including St. Rose (Roseville), Holy Trinity (El Dorado Hills), St. Basil (Vallejo), Shasta Deanery Young Adults (Redding), Our Lady of Mercy (Redding), Good Shepherd (Elk Grove), Sacred Heart (Red Bluff), as well as movements from throughout the Diocese including SEARCH, Recollections in Christianity, Disciples of Jesus and Mary and the Charismatic Movement.

This year’s Convention was enhanced by the performances of 6 youth bands: Fuel'd (Redding), St. John (Chico), Holy Rosary (Woodland), Jesus 24 Siete (Stockton), Lino's Band (St. Rose, Sacramento), and St. Dominic's Youth Group (Benecia); rap performances by the Diocese of Sacramento Seminarians, Recollection in Christianity (St. Charles, Sacramento) and dance music courtesy the DJs from YES (Good Shepherd, Elk Grove).

Rob Sheridan created 17 original images of the Saints for the Convention which were processed in as large banners for the mass with Bishop Jaime Soto and distributed to the youth groups as a set of trading cards with the images on the front and information on the saints lives on the back. APeX Ministries tied the day together using an excellent mix of humor, wisdom and juggling; challenging the young people to release their inner superhero just as the saints do. Their last session included a candid interview with Bishop Soto and an affirmation by Brad & Gene from APeX of his deep love and concern for youth on the local and national level. Bishop Soto currently serves as the Episcopal liaison to the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry and the chair of the United State Conference of Catholic Bishop's subcommittee on youth.Breaks featured snow cones and cotton candy provided by St. Christopher (Galt), interactive games in the festival area, and ultimate frisbee on the football field. Lunch and Dinner were provided by the Knights of Columbus chapters in Redding, Red Bluff and Anderson and a snack bar was hosted by the Our Lady of Mercy (Redding) Mission Trip. The MC for the day was Fr. Uriel Ojeda from Holy Rosary (Woodland).

Teens & Technology, Families & Faith

ATTENTION PARENTS Parents are invited to join us for a discussion at the Diocesan Pastoral Center (2110 Broadway, Sacramento) on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 @ 6pm about how the use of technology affects our family and faith lives. How can we teach our teens to be responsible online citizens? How can we, as Catholic families, strike a responsible balance in our use of technology? How does the use of technology effect our relationships in positive and negative ways? Can we strengthen our relationship with Christ on the Internet? Bring these and any other questions to this important and informative evening with other parents. Dinner will be served. Part of the evening will be a presentation by Mary Kay Hoal (St. James Parish in Davis & yoursphere.com). The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Youth Ministry & The Black Catholic Conference. YOUTH MINISTERS RETREAT DETAILS ANNOUNCED

All youth ministers (volunteer, paid, coordinators or team members) are invited to attend the Diocesan Youth Ministers Retreat on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Mercy Center in Auburn from 10am - 8pm. Cost is $50 and includes 2 meals.

The retreat theme is "Come Follow Me" and will focus on the call to youth ministry and the joys and challenges of following that call.

The retreat will be facillitated by Fr. George Wanser from Sac State Newman Center/Jesuit High School and supported by the music of "Papa" Joe Lucero from St. Dominic.

LA Congress Youth Day Lunch On The Curb

All youth ministries that are attending Youth Day at the LA Congress on February 26th are invited to our diocesan lunch gathering at 12:15pm. We will be providing a lunch service for $7.50 per lunch that includes sandwich, drink, chips and a cookie. Download the order form HERE. APEX Ministries Confirmed for Youth Convention

Sacramento's New Bishop Is A Champion for Youth Ministry

On Sunday, November 30th a mass of thanksgivng was celebrated with Bishop Weigand. The mass honored the 15 years that Sacramento has had Bishop Weigand as our Bishop. It also marked the transition of leadership to our new Bishop, Jaime Soto.

As part of the liturgy, the coat of arms on the Cathedra (Bishop's Chair) was changed to Bishop Soto's coat of arms (see picture) and the Crozier (Bishop's Staff) was passed from Bishop Weigand to Bishop Soto. Bishop Soto then walked over and sat down in the Cathedra making him officially our ninth Bishop.

It was an exciting and important event in the history of our diocese and for youth ministry!

Bishop Weigand's commitment to youth and young adult ministry will continue with new vigor under Bishop Soto.

Bishop Soto currently serves as the episcopal liason to the National Federation for Youth Ministry and as the chair of the US Bishops' Subcommittee on Youth and Young Adult Ministry. Find out more about the Bishop here: Bishops Bio

Ministry to young catholics will be a major initiative of Bishop Soto as he begins his episcopacy (time as Bishop) in Sacramento.

Looking for a great way to evangelize and motivate the youth in your parish? A team from NET Ministries will be in our diocese from April 16-23. They lead youth retreats with a focus on evangelization. They offer daytime, evening overnight and weekend options. These young adults are on fire with their faith and eager to share it with the youth of your parish oer school. Space is limited, so call SOON if you are interested. Christ individually calls each Baptized person to discipleship; to actively build the kingdom of God. Paul teaches in 2 Corinthians and elsewhere that a key part of discipleship is to discern the charisms of the Spirit that each baptized person receives and discover and develop them. The goal of our day together will be to challenge each person in attendance to look closely at their lives and the gifts that they have been given. To remind them that these "abilities" have been given for an important purpose -- to build Christ's Kingdom. Further that each person and each gift is extremely important as we together make up the body of Christ.

We will use the lives of the saints of examples of the different charisms. Workshops will focus on how to discern and use your gifts and what we can learn from the lives of the saints about how to live as disciples today. T-shirts and prayer cards of the saints drawn anime/graphic novel style will be produced.
